DETAILS
At 11am on 11 November, 1918, World War 1 hostiles ceased after nearly four years of continuous fighting on the Western Front. In 1919, King George V introduced Remembrance Day to commemorate those members of the armed forces who had died in the war. The day has since evolved to honour those who have suffered or died in any war.
The red poppy has long been an emblem of Remembrance Day. After World War 1, the flower was one of the only plants to grow in the otherwise barren battlefields of Northern France and Flanders. Its brilliant red colour was reminiscent of the blood that had been spilled on the same ground and soon the poppy became a familiar symbol of this memorial day.
This commemorative coin featured on this certificate of donation was produced by the Royal Australian Mint and pays tribute to all Australian Veterans who have suffered or died for the country's cause in wars or armed conflicts.
