Description

The Royal Australian Mint is proud to present Australia's first hologram coin, which is believed to be the world's fint double-image hologram coin. This coin has been produced as a fitting Finale to one of the mou significant years in the life of our nation, and one of the most extensive annual coin programs ever undertaken by the Royal Australian Mint.

Featuring the Rotunda on one of its reflections and a map of Australia, with the States and Territories outlined in various colours, on the other, just 10,000 of these unique coins will be produced for sale world-wide.

A revolutionary new method of producing holograms, pioneered and patented by Australia's CSIRO, has been employed for the very first time in the world on a coin. Called EXELGRAM™, the unique optically variable image (OVD) on this coin was produced through a collaboration between the Royal Australian Mint and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). The optically variable properties of the image are due to the extremely fine scale pattern of ridges covering the area of the image. This ridge pattern or 'diffraction grating' causes the light striking the image to be split into its component colours according to the spacing of the ridges in different parts of the image.

The magnificent hologram coin is housed in a 'special effects' outer box that features a metallic appearance created by printing onto a reflective coated cardboard coupled with a silver foil map of Australia and its States and mainland Territories.
