On 22 February 1965, six hundred guests turned out to witness His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, open the Royal Australian Mint. On this ceremonial occassion, these guests were experiencing the start of a new era: the first wholly Australian-operated mint, established to manufacture coins with a distinctly-Australian identity for the country's changeover to decimal currency.
Since that day, the Royal Australian Mint has released over fourteen billion coins that showcase Australia's history, modern culture, natural world, achievements and to commemorate our military. These coins are cherished worldwide as works of art, objects of beauty and cultural symbols.
